101 in 1001: Do a fitness dvd

When I originally shared 101 in 1001, I had only planned on buying a home workout DVD such as Charlotte Crosby's or any of Davina's workout DVDs. However, when Amazon had Insanity for sale at under £50, how could I not jump at the chance? Normally, Insanity retails at just over £100 for the whole set (three monthly instalments plus p&p), so to get it all for less than half the price is pretty good going!

So with Insanity, you have a variety of different workouts that you complete in 60 days (its actually 63 days/9 weeks long). Included in the box is a variety of discs to workout to each day as well as a workout calendar and a recipe book to ensure you feed for body well for the intensity of the workouts. With the recipes all being in American measurements, we had to convert the measurements into what we are familiar with. Trying to measure 3 cups of lettuce was a nightmare!

I thought I'd share a little diary throughout the two months to remind me what went through my mind during the course. Some days were harder than others, especially in the beginning. But it got better as time went on and I adjusted to it. However towards the end is when I started to notice how tired my body was. I was also doing Zumba twice a week and playing touch rugby once a week, for the last two weeks of Insanity so I've been making the most of having an extra 45 minutes to sleep in and take my time to get ready in the mornings this week. As for the diary...

Day 2: I just about made it through the warm before I wanted to cry. I didn't. Made it through the next two intervals fine, until the end when, again, I wanted to cry. Again, I didn't, but my god, it was a struggle!

Day 4: This was the day when the burn in my stomach was constant. Being hungry almost all of the time is still VERY regular. However, I'm starting to crave the healthier options instead of chocolate all of the time. Obviously I still want chocolate - I'm not a complete weirdo!

Day 10: How is Pure Cardio even a good idea so soon after the last attempt at it only 5 days ago?!

Day 11: Cardio Recovery - this is something I could warm to! Lots of stretching!

Day 17: Pure Cardio followed by Cardio Abs and an uphill power walk to work - the second of this workout combination this week!

Day 20: I feel as though I've hit a bit of a plateau at the moment in terms of weight loss. Maybe I'm in denial but I don't think this diet is working for me. On the days where I've been more careless with my diet, I've noticed the scales have favoured me.

Day 25: Cardio Recovery - the second favourite day of the week, right after the rest day. It's taken this long to notice that Shaun T says "now squat to the other side" and proceeded to go into lunges. We've noticed a lot of little mistakes like that. You'd have thought that it would have been proofed by a couple of other people before final production.

Day 27: Doing Insanity while you're already in a bad mood is not the best idea - Shaun T got the finger more than a few times! I haven't been that close to crying from exercise since the first week.

Day 31: I like the fact that I don't have to change the disk every day. It saves a surprisingly fair amount of time when you wake up late and can't remember where you left the pack of DVDs.

Day 34: I actually quite like Core Cardio and Balance during 'Recovery' Week. Despite not having a single day of doing the recovery workout.

Day 35: This was meant to be a rest day however day 36 has a Fit Test as well as the first workout (Max Interval Circuit) of Month 2. As we knew we wouldn't have enough time to both the Fit Test as well as Max Interval Circuit in the same morning before work, we sacrificed our rest day to do the Fit Test.

Day 36: I'm glad I've made it to month two. Even if I haven't done quite as well as I'd like with the diet. However, the workouts are longer this month. Max Interval is 60 minutes, and the longest of all the workouts.

Day 38: I barely made it 10 minutes into Max Cardio Conditioning before I came down with the WORST migraine I've ever had before in my life and had to go straight to bed. However, the final round of the warm up is different to the first two rounds which threw me slightly.

Day 41: I didn't pay all too much attention to this the first time round of doing Max Interval Plyo, however doing it for the second time, I noticed that we have a dodgy disk which paused during the third exercise in the first round of the warm up. The rest of the disk is fine.

Day 45: Max Interval Plyo was particularly sweaty business today. Storms were forecast which meant it was very hot and humid.

Day 46: Max Recovery was due today, however neither James nor had slept particularly well the night before, or at all that week, so we just weren't up to it. There's no point pushing yourself too far if you know you're not up to it. So we gave ourselves an unintentional rest day. At least it wasn't one of the more intense work outs.

Day 47: I'm so glad that Max Cardio Conditioning and Cardio Abs fell on a weekend for us as this took an hour and 10 minutes to complete. During the week, we just don't have the time to do 50-60 minutes of exercise as well as an extra 20-30 minutes of combined sessions. Neither of us are really morning people, and we weren't very good at waking up before we started Insanity so for us, giving up a rest day to do the Fit Test or Cardio Abs works well.

Day 50: With Max Interval Plyo being an hour long, we've found that we've lacking motivation about 2/3 of the way though. It just feels like it's too long to be enjoyable (if you can even say Insanity is enjoyable, haha).

Day 52: I'm so glad today was the last Recovery workout! It just didn't really feel worth doing.

Day 56: Only one week left. Only one week left. One. Week. Left.

Day 63: We finished the second (and final) month with our last fit test. I was pretty happy to see day 63, not just because its over, but because I actually made it all of the way through without giving up early on.

Of course, you have to add in the before and after photos...

Apologies for the terrible quality and poor lighting

Over the course of the 9 weeks, I lost a total of 7.2lbs which I guess I'm happy with. Ideally it would have been nice to have lost more, however it's my own fault for being so relaxed on the diet. On the other hand, I wouldn't have lost anywhere near that amount if I hadn't done Insanity. I didn't feel like the difference was obvious even in the slightest, however looking at the before and after photos there are small differences - mainly the bloating in the stomach. I've also noticed my clothes are fitting better as well.

According to Fitbit, my heart rate tracking dramatically improved! But then within two weeks it somehow suddenly changed its mind and was even worse than it was before I started?! Not sure how that happened, but I'm guessing that, because I only set up the heart tracking when we started Insanity, it took some time to gather some data and get an accurate reading. On the bright side, it has improved over these past two weeks while it's shown exact readings.

James and I treated ourselves to some curly fries and a pizza with sausage stuffed crusts to celebrate the end of Insanity and actually making it all the way through. I plan on giving my body more time to rest and fully recover before heading back to the gym in full force after our holiday.

Next fitness goal: 100kg deadlifts.
